The Center for Environmental Education, Conservation and Interpretation (CECIA), established in 1993 by the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico (UIPR), complements the traditional teaching programs at the institution by providing mechanisms for the integration of students from different disciplines in research on environmental issues. This multidisciplinary approach is fundamental in the preparation of professionals with practical experience in the scientific and social interpretation of environmental problems. The Inter-American University of Puerto Rico, through CECIA, seeks to develop social responsibility and critical skills in citizens and students, so that they can make sound decisions from any professional niche in which they may perform in society.
CECIA is an institutional project of the Office of the President of the UIPR, which integrates the nine campuses under a collaborative structure. Faculty and students from the different units, through CECIA, have the opportunity to participate in environmental education and research projects and/or work on their thesis projects. The geographic position of the different campuses and the administrative structure of the Center provide for the integration of faculty, students, government, citizens and industry under the collaborative model of environmental action. Among the Center's many goals are the development of appropriate technology for environmental management, treatment and interpretation within a framework of applied research under a community outreach program to solve environmental problems.
