FEDERAL WORK -
STUDY PROGRAM
What is the
Federal Work-Study Program?
The Federal Work-Study Program offers jobs
for undergraduate and graduate students with
financial need, allowing them to earn money
to help pay their education expenses. The
program Perkins encourages community service
work and work related to the recipient’s
course of study.
How much money will I be paid?
You will be paid at least the current
federal minimum wage, but you might earn
more, depending on the type of work you do
and the skills required. The total amount
that is awarded depends on the date of your
application, your financial need and the
institutional costs such as tuition, fees,
and room and board. Participating students
cannot be paid commissions or quotas.
How will I be paid?
Undergraduate students will be paid by the
hour. Graduate students may be paid by the
hour or given a salary. Your university must
pay you at least once a month. It must pay
you directly unless you authorize it to
credit your account or to apply the money to
institutional costs such as tuition, fees
and room and board.
Are the jobs under the Federal Work-Study
Program on or off campus?
The program covers jobs on or off campus. If
you work on campus, you will usually work
for your university. If you work off campus,
your employer will usually be a private
non-profit organization or a public agency
and the work performed must be in the public
interest.
Can I work as many hours as I want?
No, you cannot. The amount you earn cannot
exceed your total Federal Work-Study Program
award. When assigning working hours, your
employer or your financial aid administrator
will consider your class schedule and your
academic progress.
